Fluorescent Sodalite Butterfly Wings (a.k.a. Yooperlite)
Fluorescent Sodalite Butterfly Wings (a.k.a. Yooperlite)
A breathtaking fusion of transformation and light.
Each handcrafted butterfly sculpture is carved from Fluorescent Sodalite, a sodalite-bearing syenite that glows brilliantly under UV or blacklight. By daylight, it appears as a beautifully marbled gray-and-brown stone — but when illuminated by UV light, it erupts with molten orange-gold fluorescence, as though the wings themselves were touched by firelight.
Mounted on a sleek black stand, this butterfly embodies the balance between shadow and illumination — reminding us that even in darkness, light finds a way to shine through.
🌙
About Fluorescent Sodalite (a.k.a. Yooperlite)
Fluorescent Sodalite has been known and studied by mineralogists for decades across the world, with deposits found in regions such as Canada, Greenland, and Africa. The mineral’s glow is caused by sodalite reacting to long-wave UV light, producing a vivid fluorescent effect.
In 2017, a local rock hunter named Erik Rintamaki discovered a new deposit of fluorescent sodalite-bearing syenite along the Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. What made this find unique was the natural tumbling from the Great Lakes, creating smooth, beach-found stones that glow intensely under UV light.
He later trademarked the name “Yooperlite,” inspired by the nickname “Yoopers,” which refers to residents of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
So, while Rintamaki didn’t discover fluorescent sodalite itself, his find brought worldwide attention to this incredible mineral and its glowing beauty native to Michigan’s shores.
